Is Microsoft possibly shooting itself in the foot with its recent Surface announcement? Unsubstantiated reports claim that HP is (predictably) ditching Windows RT in favour of Android. If this is the case, it would be the second in perhaps many that wish to send a signal to Microsoft about where they should (not) be spending their R&D dollars.
I don’t see how Microsoft can continue to compete against its own OEM customers and expect them to invest in developing hardware to support new operating systems like Windows 8 RT for which they must also pay a Windows license. ‘Something’s gotta give’, as the song goes – either everyone jumps ship and Mircosoft is the only one left ‘holding the baby’ or it ‘throws the baby out with the bath water’ and lets its OEM get on with building a Windows 8 tablet business.
